Time & Money
"Osama Bin Laden, for all his hatred of American culture, American religion and American politics, was very fond of American dollars. How did money succeed where gods and kings failed? "
Yuval Noah Harari - Sapiens A Brief History of Humankind
A series that draws inspiration from disassembling and re-presenting established designs and symbols. I have taken well known and not so well known symbols and designs, cut them up and reassembled them. Unlike traditional collage, the picture plane i.e. the surface is of primary concern. In most of the pieces I establish a traditional rectangular format however, in “Gee”, the wall is considered the picture plane.
I am particularly drawn to symbols because of the dichotomy of meaning and substance they represent. The near universal or,at least world wide, acceptance of the meaning of certain symbols is revelatory of human intelligence and ultimately intelligence itself. The power of money in the form of paper currency is astounding, bordering on miraculous - the most iconic example of which (at present) is the U.S. 100 dollar.bill. The continued evolution of currency is inevitable and the symbols that represent currency will follow.
The lack of physical presence other than ink on paper - is the point of inquiry and interest for this work. The conversion of what is two dimensional into a three dimensional object, I hope will inspire insight and inquiry into that which is taken for granted.
